Domestic Automobiles Accelerate “Going Global”

Customs officers inspect domestically produced vehicles ready for export

On June 17, under the supervision of customs officers from Nansha Customs (affiliated with Guangzhou Customs), a roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel carrying over 780 domestic automobiles, including brands like BYD and Chery, slowly departed the port.

“Ro-ro ships have significant advantages in vehicle loading and unloading efficiency. A single ro-ro vessel can load nearly 5,000 vehicles of the same model within 24 hours without the need for crane equipment, saving 3-5 days compared to other transportation methods. Additionally, ro-ro ships are equipped with dedicated parking spaces and securing devices, allowing vehicles to drive on and off directly, which enhances safety,” explained Zhou Junbin, customs declaration manager at Huayi Logistics Supply Chain (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. In the first five months of this year, the company exported over 52,700 vehicles through Guangzhou Nansha Port, a year-on-year increase of nearly 20%.

To ensure smooth customs clearance for exported vehicles, Nansha Customs has optimized the entire export supervision process, implementing efficient measures such as “inspecting vehicles upon arrival” and “inspecting vessels upon docking.” Export vehicles can now complete inspection and clearance within one hour of arriving at the port.

“We leverage smart customs solutions to enhance supervision efficiency. Platforms like ‘Smart Seaport’ and ‘Intelligent Monitoring’ enable real-time tracking of key milestones in vehicle exports, including transportation, port arrival, and loading, as well as critical details such as VIN codes, movement trajectories, storage locations, and loading schedules,” said Yin Haiyun, head of the Xiaohu Vehicle Supervision Section at Nansha Customs. “Additionally, customs supports Nansha Auto Port in developing integrated transportation models like ‘ro-ro shipping + rail-sea intermodal’ and ‘ro-ro shipping + ro-ro barge transport’ to facilitate multi-port collaborative exports.”

Currently, Guangzhou Nansha Port offers international ro-ro shipping routes covering more than 20 countries and regions. According to statistics, in the first five months of this year, Nansha Customs supervised the export of 217,000 vehicles through the port, a year-on-year increase of 56.5%, maintaining strong growth momentum.
